Am I Too Old for Counselling?
It's a question many people quietly ask themselves.
Perhaps you've spent most of your life looking after other people and don't feel sure it's your turn now. Maybe you've coped on your own for decades and wonder whether there's any point in starting therapy at this stage of life. Or perhaps you've never talked about your feelings before and worry you've left it too late.
The simple answer is no. You're never too old for counselling.
Life doesn't stop bringing challenges as we get older. Retirement, changes in health, bereavement, caring responsibilities, relationship changes, loneliness or simply wondering who you are now can all leave you feeling unsettled. Even positive changes can take time to adjust to.
Many people tell me they've spent years putting everyone else's needs first. By the time they begin counselling, they aren't looking for someone to fix them. They're looking for a space that's just for them, where they can think out loud without worrying about being judged or burdening the people they love.
You don't have to have experienced a major crisis to benefit from therapy. You might simply want to understand yourself better, make sense of a change in your life or find your own voice after years of putting it to one side.
And if you've never spoken about your feelings before, that's okay too. There isn't an age when you should already know how to do therapy. We work at your pace, starting wherever feels right for you.
Counselling isn't about looking backwards unless that's where you want to go. It's about making sense of your life as it is now and supporting you with whatever feels important today.
