I Don't Know Who I Am Anymore

Sometimes the hardest feeling to describe isn't sadness or anxiety. It's feeling as though you've somehow lost yourself.

You might recognise the person you see in the mirror but no longer recognise the life you're living. Perhaps you've spent years looking after other people, focusing on work, raising a family or adapting to unexpected changes. Somewhere along the way, you stopped asking yourself what you wanted or needed.

If that feels familiar, you're not alone.

Many people reach a point where they begin asking, "Who am I now?" A relationship may have ended, the children may have left home, you've retired, received a health diagnosis or simply realised that the life you've been living no longer feels like it fits. Sometimes there isn't one obvious reason at all. The feeling has just crept up quietly over time.

It can be unsettling when you're no longer sure what matters to you or what direction you want your life to take. You might even wonder whether you've changed or whether you've simply lost touch with yourself.

Person-centred counselling offers a space to explore those questions without pressure to have the answers straight away. There isn't an expectation that you'll reinvent yourself or make dramatic changes overnight. Instead, we begin by making sense of where you are now.

As you talk, you may start to notice patterns, reconnect with parts of yourself that have been pushed aside or discover that the person you thought you'd lost has been there all along, waiting to be heard.

Finding yourself isn't about becoming someone new. Often, it's about gently rediscovering the person you've always been beneath life's responsibilities, expectations and challenges.

At Pebbleshed Therapy, I offer online person-centred counselling for adults across the UK. If you're feeling disconnected from yourself or wondering who you are anymore, you're welcome to book a free 20-minute initial consultation. It's a relaxed opportunity to ask questions, find out how I work and see whether we'd like to work together, with no obligation to book further sessions.
