Can Therapy Help If I Don't Know What's Wrong?
One of the most common reasons people hesitate to start counselling is because they can't explain why they need it.
You might find yourself saying, "I don't know what's wrong with me," or "I can't really put my finger on it." Nothing dramatic has happened, yet something doesn't feel quite right. You may feel unsettled, overwhelmed, disconnected or unlike yourself without knowing why.
That uncertainty can be frustrating.
It's easy to think you should wait until you have a clearer reason for seeking therapy. But you don't need to arrive with a diagnosis, a single problem to solve or a perfectly organised explanation of how you're feeling.
Not knowing is enough.
Sometimes we've been carrying so much for so long that we've lost sight of what's affecting us. At other times, our thoughts and feelings become so tangled that it's difficult to separate one thing from another. Trying to make sense of everything on your own can leave you feeling even more stuck.
Person-centred counselling gives you the time and space to explore those feelings without pressure to have the answers. You don't need to know where to begin. We simply begin where you are.
As you talk, things often become clearer. You may start to notice patterns, make connections or find words for feelings that previously seemed impossible to describe. Sometimes the greatest relief comes from realising that what you've been experiencing actually makes sense.
Therapy isn't only about solving obvious problems. Sometimes it's about understanding yourself more deeply, especially when life feels confusing or you're no longer sure what you need.
You don't have to know what's wrong before you ask for support. Sometimes counselling is where you begin to find out.
