I Don't Feel Like Myself Anymore. Can Counselling Help?
There are times in life when you look in the mirror and recognise yourself, but somehow don't quite feel like you anymore.
Perhaps you're more anxious than you used to be. Maybe you're quieter, more irritable or constantly exhausted. Things you once enjoyed don't seem to interest you in the same way or you find yourself going through the motions without really feeling present.
It can be unsettling when you don't recognise yourself.
Sometimes there's a clear reason. A relationship may have changed, you've experienced a loss, started a new job, become a parent, received a health diagnosis or gone through another significant life transition. At other times, there isn't one obvious explanation. The feeling has simply crept in so gradually that one day you realise you're not quite sure when things changed.
It's easy to wonder whether this is just who you are now.
Person-centred counselling doesn't begin with the assumption that you need fixing. Instead, it offers you the time and space to explore what's been happening in your life and how it has affected you.
When we're busy coping, looking after other people or simply trying to get through each day, we don't always notice how much we're carrying. Therapy gives you the opportunity to slow down, untangle your thoughts and reconnect with the parts of yourself that may have become buried beneath stress, expectations or difficult experiences.
You don't have to arrive knowing exactly what's changed or how to get back to the person you used to be. In fact, counselling isn't always about getting back. Sometimes it's about discovering who you are now after everything you've been through.
That can feel daunting but it can also be hopeful.
At Pebbleshed Therapy, I offer online person-centred counselling for adults across the UK. If you don't feel like yourself anymore and you're wondering whether counselling could help, you're welcome to book a free 20-minute initial consultation. It's a relaxed opportunity to ask questions, find out how I work and see whether we'd like to work together, with no obligation to book further sessions.
