I Wish Someone Would Just Tell Me What to Do. Can Counselling Help?

Sometimes life feels so overwhelming that making even small decisions can seem impossible.

You might be stuck between two choices, questioning every decision you make or going round and round in circles without getting any closer to an answer. When you're feeling exhausted, anxious or overwhelmed, it's natural to wish someone would simply tell you what to do.

Many people come to counselling hoping for exactly that.

It can feel reassuring to imagine that someone else has the answer. But if I told you what to do, I'd be making decisions based on my life, my values and my experiences – not yours. The choice might solve today's problem but it wouldn't necessarily help you feel more confident the next time life becomes uncertain.

Person-centred counselling takes a different approach.

Rather than giving advice, I offer a space where you can slow down and untangle what's going on. Sometimes when everything is spinning around in your head, it's difficult to know what you really think or feel. Talking things through with someone who listens without judgement often brings a surprising amount of clarity.

That doesn't mean I'll simply sit in silence while you struggle. I'll listen carefully, notice patterns, gently challenge you when it feels helpful and stay alongside you while you explore what's important to you. Together we can make sense of what's keeping you stuck, without me taking over your decisions.

People are often surprised to discover that the answers they were searching for were already there. They'd just become buried beneath worry, self-doubt or the expectations of other people. As things begin to feel less tangled, it often becomes easier to recognise what feels right for you.

Counselling isn't about someone else deciding the direction your life should take. It's about helping you feel more confident in deciding it for yourself.

At Pebbleshed Therapy, I offer online person-centred counselling for adults across the UK. If you're feeling stuck and don't know where to turn next, you're welcome to book a free 20-minute initial consultation. It's a relaxed opportunity to ask questions, find out how I work and see whether we'd like to work together, with no obligation to book further sessions.
