When Is the Right Time to Start Counselling?

If you've been wondering whether now is the right time to start counselling, the answer may be simpler than you think.

You don't have to wait until you're in crisis.

Many people imagine therapy is something you only need when life has become unbearable. They tell themselves to keep going a little longer, to cope on their own or to wait until things get worse before asking for help.

But counselling isn't only for moments of crisis.

You might be feeling overwhelmed, struggling with anxiety, adjusting to a life change, finding relationships difficult or simply feeling unlike yourself. You may not even be able to explain what's wrong. You just know something doesn't feel quite right anymore.

Those are all valid reasons to seek support.

Person-centred counselling isn't about deciding whether your problems are "big enough". It's about giving yourself the opportunity to pause, make sense of what's happening and explore your thoughts and feelings in a safe, accepting space.

Many people tell me they spent months, or even years, wondering whether they should contact a therapist. Looking back, they often realise they were waiting for permission to put themselves first.

You don't need permission.

You don't have to have all the answers before you begin and you don't need to know exactly what you want to talk about. Therapy can start with something as simple as, "I'm not really sure why I'm here," or "I don't feel like myself anymore." That's enough.

There isn't a perfect time to start counselling. Life will probably never feel completely calm or organised. The right time is often when you notice that you're carrying more than you want to carry on your own and you're ready to be listened to without judgement.

At Pebbleshed Therapy, I offer online person-centred counselling for adults across the UK. If you've been thinking about therapy but aren't sure whether now is the right time, you're welcome to book a free 20-minute initial consultation. It's a relaxed opportunity to ask questions, find out how I work and see whether we'd like to work together, with no obligation to book further sessions.
