Is Online Therapy as Good as Face-to-Face Counselling Sessions?

If you're thinking about starting counselling, one of the first questions you might ask is whether online therapy is really as effective as meeting a therapist in person.

The short answer is yes – for many people it is. But the more important question isn't which is better. It's which feels right for you.

Some people worry that therapy can only work if they're sitting in the same room as their counsellor. In reality, research consistently shows that online therapy can be just as effective as face-to-face counselling for many people. More importantly, it's the relationship between you and your therapist that makes the biggest difference. Feeling safe, understood and able to speak openly is what helps therapy become meaningful.

Online counselling also has some practical benefits. Being in your own home can help you feel more relaxed, especially if you're feeling anxious about starting therapy. There's no travelling, no searching for parking and no sitting in a waiting room wondering what to expect. For many people, joining a session from a familiar space makes it easier to settle into the conversation.

It can also fit more comfortably around everyday life. Whether you're balancing work, family responsibilities, caring for someone else, managing a health condition or simply have a busy schedule, online therapy offers flexibility without compromising the quality of the support you receive.

People sometimes wonder whether it's possible to build a genuine connection through a screen. In my experience, it absolutely is. I still notice facial expressions, body language, tone of voice and those quieter moments that often say just as much as words. We can laugh together, sit with difficult emotions and explore what's on your mind just as we would if we were in the same room.

That said, online counselling isn't the right choice for everyone. Some people simply feel more comfortable meeting face to face, and that's completely okay. There isn't a right or wrong option. The best counselling is the one that helps you feel comfortable enough to be yourself.

At Pebbleshed Therapy, I offer online person-centred counselling to adults across the UK. If you're wondering whether online therapy feels like the right fit for you, you're welcome to book a free 20-minute initial consultation. It's a relaxed opportunity to ask questions, find out how I work and see whether we'd like to work together. There is no obligation to book further sessions afterwards – just a chance to take that first step in a way that feels comfortable for you.
